It was during my time at a residential school, my first venture away from home, that I found myself engulfed in a whirlwind of emotions. Struggling to express these intense feelings, I turned to art as my sole medium of communication.
My vision revolved around the human back, considering it as a canvas for my artistic expression. It was in this choice that I found my inspiration, believing that the back offered a unique canvas, waiting to be painted.
Understanding the complexity of my vision, I knew I had only one chance to capture the essence I sought. Every stroke of the brush was deliberate, each petal of the flowers placed with precision.
To suspend my floral creations, I enlisted the help of the school's maintenance team, who affixed hooks on either side of the wall. A sturdy plastic rope stretched between the hooks, providing a stable foundation for my delicate props.
My creative process began with a coat of white acrylic paint, covering the canvas of the boy's back. This was followed by the introduction of lights, who's hues subtly diffused through gelatine paper.
I progressed to splashing an array of acrylic colors onto the figure. Starting from the neck, the colors cascaded down, transforming the blank canvas into a vivid tapestry of emotions.
I introduced black, gradually emerging from the lower back of the figure. This deliberate choice aimed to imbue the photographs with a sense of negativity, inviting viewers into a world of melancholy.
Simultaneously, I adjusted the position of the props, ensuring each photograph told a unique story.
The arrangement of the props became crucial here, strategically designed to evoke feelings of sadness and introspection.
In the final stages, I wanted to show how intense emotions can completely drain a person.
Vivid red color represents strong and overwhelming emotions that has taken over. The garland became a poignant reference point, symbolizing the journey from the innocence of initial emotions to the overwhelming complexity of the final state. The flowers, once vibrant and full of life, now served as a contrast against the stark red and the desaturated background, highlighting the profound transformation that has taken place.
This picture captures not just the absence of emotions but the aftermath of their overwhelming presence. The series, now complete, stands as a testament to the human capacity to endure and the resilience found in the face of emotional storms.
